One of the great things about South West Chinese Christian Church is our commitment to serving university students and young adults in our church and our local community. It is upon this desire that the ‘SPUR’ ministry began in 2013, and we’ve been seeing amazing things come out of it.
We are proud to announce that we will be continuing this year, and we will kickstart the year with the topic of ‘Christ and Culture: Bend, Blend, or Defend’ with Pastor Peter Ko speaking. We have a host of other great speakers lined up this year, such as Dr Byron Smith speaking on Christians and Ecology and Murray Smith (Lecturer at Christ College) speaking on Social Justice.
Therefore, 2014 is going to be a fantastic year for SPUR, and we can’t wait to see you on the 30th of March!
Information on SPUR #1 are the following:
Date: Sunday the 30th of March, 2014
Time: 7pm
Location: South West Chinese Christian Church, 4 Morgan Street, Kingsgrove
Speaker: Pastor Peter Ko (Lead Pastor, South West Chinese Christian Church)
Culture is all around us. It goes further than just being Asian or European – and for most of us – our personal experiences can attest to this. From hipsters to emos, surfies to skaters, cultures can exist on many levels and are a way for us to find belonging and express our identities, and are a fundamental aspect of human sociology. So fundamental, that perhaps sometimes we ask ourselves whether our cultural identity dictates our actions, or if our actions are still ours.
As Christians whose identities lie with Christ, there is then a clear tension between Christ and culture. Yet does this mean we should distance ourselves from all worldly cultures? Is being a hipster wrong? How far is too far when engaging with culture? What does being “all things to all people” look like for us today?
